A thesis is a long, formally written document submitted for a degree, presenting the candidate’s original research, the method used and the conclusions reached. In India and the United Kingdom “thesis” usually denotes the doctoral work and “dissertation” the shorter master’s work, while in the United States the usage is often reversed. Before the thesis comes the synopsis, a concise research plan submitted at registration. The work is carried out under a supervisor, monitored by a research advisory or doctoral committee, and finally examined by external evaluators and defended in an open viva voce. A thesis must show an original contribution to knowledge, a mastery of the literature, and a sound method. Its parts follow a standard order: preliminary pages, main chapters and end matter.
The preliminary (front) pages come before the first chapter. They normally include the title page (title, candidate’s name, degree, supervisor, institution, month and year), the supervisor’s certificate stating that the work is original and was done under guidance, the candidate’s declaration of originality, the acknowledgements, the abstract, the table of contents, and the lists of tables, figures and abbreviations. A preface is written by the author about the purpose and scope of the work, whereas a foreword is written by someone else. These pages are numbered in lower-case Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), and the main text restarts with Arabic numeral 1.
Memorise
Certificate: by the supervisor. Declaration: by the candidate.
Preface: by the author; foreword: by another person.
Front matter in Roman numerals; text in Arabic numerals.
Analyse / traps
If the question asks who certifies originality of guidance, the answer is the supervisor, not the candidate.
The typical chapters are: Introduction (background, statement of the problem, objectives, hypotheses, significance, scope and delimitations, definitions of terms); Review of Related Literature (what is known, the gap and the theoretical framework); Methodology (design, population, sample, tools, procedure and the plan for analysis); Results or Data Analysis (findings in tables and figures, with minimal interpretation); Discussion (meaning of the findings, comparison with earlier studies); and Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations (what was found, what follows, limitations and suggestions for further research). Some theses merge results and discussion; qualitative theses may arrange chapters by theme.
The end matter follows the last chapter. The bibliography or reference list gives full details of sources, alphabetically by author. Appendices hold supporting material that would interrupt the text: questionnaires, tests, raw data, permission letters and extra tables, each labelled Appendix A, B and so on and mentioned in the text. A glossary is an alphabetical list of specialised terms with meanings. An index is an alphabetical list of subjects and names with page numbers, mostly used in books. In Indian practice the term annexure is used for official documents or material from other sources attached to the thesis, although appendix and annexure are often used loosely.
Memorise
References before appendices in most styles (APA).
Appendix = supporting material; glossary = terms; index = subjects with page numbers.
Analyse / traps
An index is not a table of contents: the table of contents lists the thesis’s own headings in order of appearance, while an index is alphabetical.
The UGC regulates the doctoral degree through its Ph.D. regulations (a 2016 version, later revised in 2022), which cover admission, course work, supervisors, research advisory committees, duration, evaluation and submission. The thesis is evaluated by external examiners, followed by an open viva voce. Earlier regulations required scholars to make presentations and publish a paper before submission, so check the current rules. A soft copy of the approved thesis must be deposited with INFLIBNET for hosting on Shodhganga, and under the UGC (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2018 the thesis must carry an undertaking of originality and be checked with plagiarism-detection software.
Memorise
Thesis soft copy → INFLIBNET → Shodhganga.
Plagiarism regulations: UGC 2018; undertaking of originality is mandatory.
Evaluation: external examiner(s) and open viva.
Analyse / traps
Do not mix up the Ph.D. regulations (degree process) with the 2018 plagiarism regulations (academic integrity).
