Wisdom for the Journey
At NetLawVerse, we believe that education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but also the cultivation of wisdom, discipline and sound judgment.
Our नीति-दोहा feature draws inspiration from India's rich literary heritage, bringing timeless reflections on learning, perseverance, humility, integrity and human conduct into the journey of competitive examination preparation.
For an aspirant preparing to enter the legal profession, these reflections offer a moment to pause, think and reconnect with the values that make knowledge meaningful.
Preparing for the UGC NET is a long road, and it is not always an easy one. There will be days when the syllabus feels vast, when a mock test result disappoints, or when progress seems slower than the effort you are putting in. These are not signs that you are failing. They are part of every serious journey, and every aspirant before you has walked through them.
The dohas gathered here are meant to be a quiet companion on those days. Kabir reminds us of patience and honest self-reflection, Tulsidas of kindness and courage, Rahim of humility and generosity, and Vrind of the quiet power of steady practice. Read one when you begin, or when you need to pause. You do not have to read them all at once.
We also hope they point towards something larger than a result. The law is a profession of service, and those who enter it carry a responsibility to be honest, fair and compassionate. A good score opens a door, and good character decides what you do once you walk through it. May you seek both.

(What you plan to do tomorrow, do today, and what you plan to do today, do now. Disaster can strike in a moment, so when will you do it?)
(O mind, have patience, for everything happens in its own time. Even if the gardener waters the tree with a hundred pots, the fruit comes only when the season arrives.)
(Those who searched found it, like a diver going into deep water. I, poor soul, feared drowning and stayed sitting on the shore.)
(I set out to find a bad person and found none. When I looked within my own heart, no one was worse than me.)
(The world wore itself out reading books, yet no one became truly wise. One who learns the two and a half letters of love becomes the real scholar.)
(Keep your critic close, even build him a hut in your courtyard. Without water or soap, he cleanses your nature.)
(Speak words that are free of ego. They soothe others and bring peace to you as well.)
(Do not ask a sage’s caste, ask about his knowledge. Value the sword, and let the sheath lie aside.)
(Ages passed turning the rosary, yet the mind did not change. Put down the beads in your hand and turn the beads of your mind.)
(O Lord, give me just enough to sustain my family, so that I do not go hungry and no holy guest leaves my door hungry.)

(In times of trouble, your companions are knowledge, humility, wisdom, courage, good deeds, commitment to truth, and faith in God.)
(In this world there are all kinds of people. Get along with everyone, as strangers come together by chance on a boat crossing a river.)

(Do not snap the thread of love with a jerk. Once broken it does not join again, and if it does, a knot remains.)
(Seeing something big, do not discard the small. Where a needle is needed, what can a sword do?)
(Trees do not eat their own fruit, and lakes do not drink their own water. Rahim says the wise gather wealth only for the good of others.)
(One of noble character cannot be spoiled by bad company. Sandalwood is not poisoned even when snakes coil around it.)

(With constant practice, even a dull mind becomes skilled. A rope moving back and forth leaves marks even on a stone.)
Prepare with discipline.
Learn with curiosity.
Reflect with wisdom.
