Can a CLAT PG score really lead to a PSU job?
Yes. Over the last several years, a number of public sector undertakings (PSUs) have used CLAT PG scores to shortlist law graduates for legal posts. The score works like a first filter, so a strong rank can open doors that have nothing to do with an LL.M. seat.
A short history
Lists published for the 2020 admission cycle already named BHEL, ONGC, Power Grid, Oil India and NTPC among the PSUs recruiting through CLAT PG. Since then, the practice has continued year after year, and coverage of later cycles adds Indian Oil (IOCL), and, according to some sources, NHPC, THDC, GAIL, MRPL, POSOCO and NHAI. The Indian Army’s JAG Department, which is not a PSU, has also used CLAT PG scores.
PSUs that have recruited through CLAT PG
| PSU | Typical posts | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| BHEL | Law Officer | Multiple sources |
| ONGC | Assistant Legal Advisor | Multiple sources |
| NTPC | Legal Executive Trainee | Multiple sources |
| Power Grid (PGCIL) | Executive Trainee (Law) | Multiple sources |
| Oil India (OIL) | Legal posts | Multiple sources |
| Indian Oil (IOCL) | Legal posts | Multiple sources |
| NHPC, THDC, GAIL, MRPL, POSOCO, NHAI | Legal posts | Some sources, some cycles |
Posts, grades and openings differ every year, and a PSU may skip a year. Treat this as a list of employers to watch, not a promise.
How selection usually works
- The CLAT PG score shortlists you. Most PSUs take the score from the current admission cycle, so you generally cannot reuse an older one.
- An interview follows, and some PSUs add a group discussion. The final merit combines the score with these stages.
- Weightage varies. In past cycles, reported weightage for the CLAT PG score ranged from about 60% to 85%, depending on the company.
Eligibility, in general terms
- A valid LL.B. degree with a minimum percentage. Reports for some PSUs mention around 60%, with relaxation for reserved categories.
- An age limit set by each PSU, with relaxation as per government rules.
- A valid score in the relevant CLAT PG cycle.
How to prepare for this route
- Register for CLAT PG on time and aim for the highest score you can. The exam gates the shortlist.
- Watch each PSU’s careers page, because notices usually appear after the CLAT PG result.
- Keep documents ready: LL.B. marksheets, category certificates and ID.
- Prepare for the interview with commercial law, contracts, arbitration, labour law and basic corporate and energy sector knowledge.
What a PSU legal executive actually does
PSU legal teams handle contracts and tenders, arbitration and litigation, labour and service matters, regulatory compliance, land and property issues, and advice to senior management. Law officers and legal advisors often work with outside counsel, appear before tribunals and draft agreements worth very large sums. It is a stable, structured career that rewards strong fundamentals in commercial and public law.
When to expect notices
PSUs announce vacancies on their own career pages, and notices commonly follow the CLAT PG result, with applications opening in the weeks after. The CLAT PG result is usually declared around the third week of December. Dates and the number of posts differ every year, and some PSUs do not recruit in a given year.
How this route compares with others
| Route | How you enter | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| PSU legal officer | CLAT PG score, then interview | Corporate, contracts and public-sector careers |
| LL.M. at an NLU | CLAT PG rank and counselling | Specialisation, research, academia or practice |
| Assistant Professor and JRF | UGC NET Law | Teaching and research careers |
These routes are not exclusive. Many candidates write CLAT PG and UGC NET Law in the same season, and a good CLAT PG score keeps both the LL.M. and the PSU options open.
