CLAT PG 2027 FAQ.
Straight answers to the questions aspirants ask most, from dates and fees to eligibility, pattern and counselling.
Registration closes on 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM. The exam is on 6 December 2026.
What is CLAT PG and who conducts it?
CLAT PG is the Common Law Admission Test for postgraduate law. The Consortium of National Law Universities conducts it, and its score is the route into the one-year LL.M. programmes at the participating National Law Universities (NLUs). Several other law schools also accept CLAT scores, so check each institution’s own admission notice.
When is CLAT PG 2027 and what are the exam timings?
CLAT PG 2027 is on Sunday, 6 December 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Consortium has announced it as an offline, pen-and-paper exam.
What are the CLAT PG 2027 registration dates and how do I apply?
Online registration opened on 3 August 2026 and closes on 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM. Applications are online only, through consortiumofnlus.ac.in, and an application without the fee is not accepted. Fill in the form carefully, pay the fee and save your confirmation.
What is the CLAT PG application fee?
The official CLAT 2027 PG instructions list ₹4,000 for General, OBC and NRI candidates and ₹3,500 for SC, ST, BPL and PwD candidates. The fee is paid online only, is non-refundable and non-adjustable, and bank transaction charges are extra. Previous years’ question papers cost ₹500 separately and are not part of the fee.
Who is eligible for CLAT PG?
You need an LL.B. or an equivalent law degree with at least 50% marks, or 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, according to published coverage of the notification. Final-year LL.B. students can apply, but they must meet the conditions and deadlines set by the Consortium. There is no upper age limit.
What is the CLAT PG exam pattern and marking scheme?
The paper has 120 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 120 minutes, for 120 marks. There are no separate sections. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. The questions are passage-based, so you read a legal extract and answer questions on it.
Is there negative marking in CLAT PG?
Yes. Every incorrect answer deducts 0.25 marks, and an unattempted question carries no penalty. Assuming four options per question, a blind guess is worth about +0.06 marks on average, so it roughly breaks even. Eliminating options is what raises your expected gain, so eliminate first and guess second.
What is the CLAT PG syllabus?
The paper tests core law subjects. These usually include Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Rights and Labour Law. Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence are widely treated as the most important areas. Always check the latest syllabus in the official notification.
How should I prepare for CLAT PG?
Build your concepts first, then practise applying them. Read legal passages every day to improve speed, revise each subject’s core principles and landmark cases, and solve previous-year papers under timed conditions. Many subjects overlap with UGC NET Law, so the free notes and MCQs on NET Law-Verse are a useful head start while the CLAT PG section grows.
Which universities accept CLAT PG scores?
The National Law Universities that participate in the Consortium’s counselling offer LL.M. seats through CLAT PG. Seat numbers, reservation policy and fees differ for each NLU and are given in the official information brochure. Other law colleges also accept CLAT scores, but they run their own admission process.
What happens after the exam: result, merit list and counselling?
The result is expected around the third week of December 2026, based on the usual schedule. Counselling is online and runs in several rounds, with freeze and float options for candidates. A merit list is prepared for each participating NLU using your score and the NLU preferences you submit. Seat allotments are provisional until you complete the admission steps.
How are ties in CLAT PG scores broken?
According to the official instructions, a tie in marks is broken in this order: first by higher age, then by a computerised draw of lots.
What is the difference between CLAT PG and UGC NET Law?
CLAT PG is an admission test for LL.M. seats at NLUs. UGC NET Law is an eligibility test for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship in law. Many students prepare for both, because the subjects overlap.
Which documents do I upload with the CLAT PG application?
You upload a recent front-facing passport-size photograph with a plain background and your signature. Depending on your category, you also upload an SC/ST/OBC category certificate, a PwD certificate from the competent authority, or a BPL certificate. All documents must be in PDF format. You submit the originals to the university that allots you a seat.
Do PwD candidates get extra time in CLAT PG?
Yes. Eligible candidates in the PwD category write from 2:00 PM to 4:40 PM, while other candidates write from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The timings are subject to revision, so check your admit card.
Can NRIs and foreign nationals apply for CLAT PG?
Indian nationals, NRIs, PIO card holders and OCI card holders can appear in CLAT PG. Foreign nationals are not eligible to appear. For NRI and NRI-sponsored seats, you approach the respective NLU directly, because the Consortium does not allot seats in those categories.
Can I change my category or programme after paying the fee?
No. Once the application is submitted and paid, you cannot change the programme, category or BPL field. If you submit more than one application, only the last one is considered, and the fees for earlier forms are not refunded.
How is my CLAT PG score calculated?
Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. For example, if you attempt 100 questions and get 80 right and 20 wrong, your score is 80 minus 5, which is 75 out of 120. Leaving a question blank costs nothing.
How many candidates take CLAT PG and how many seats are there?
In the CLAT 2026 cycle, the Consortium reported 17,335 applicants for the PG programme, with 92.45% attending the exam. That is about 16,026 candidates. Published coverage puts LL.M. seats across the NLUs at roughly 1,500 to 1,750, depending on the year and what is counted, so roughly nine to ten candidates appeared for every seat.
How many NLUs are members of the Consortium?
The Consortium’s official website says twenty-six National Law Universities have joined as members. See our list of participating NLUs for names and cities.
