Which law schools take CLAT PG scores?

CLAT PG is run by the Consortium of National Law Universities, which was established on 19 August 2017. Its official website says that twenty-six National Law Universities have joined it as members. Admission to the LL.M. programmes of these universities is through CLAT PG and the Consortium’s common counselling.

Things to know before you choose

  • Not every NLU offers an LL.M. through CLAT PG every year. The programmes, seats, specialisations, reservations and fees are set by each university and published in the official information brochure.
  • National Law University, Delhi is not a Consortium member. It holds its own entrance test, AILET.
  • Membership can change. New NLUs have joined over the years, so always confirm the current list on consortiumofnlus.ac.in.
  • Other law colleges also accept CLAT scores. Private and state institutions do this on their own terms, outside the Consortium’s counselling, so check each college’s admission notice.

How LL.M. admission through CLAT PG works

  1. Register and apply online at consortiumofnlus.ac.in within the notified window, and pay the fee.
  2. Write CLAT PG, a single 120-question paper.
  3. Register for counselling after the result and fill in your NLU preferences.
  4. Receive allotments in rounds. A merit list is prepared for each NLU using your score, category and preferences.
  5. Freeze or float. Freezing accepts the seat. Floating keeps you in the running for a better preference in the next round.
  6. Pay and verify. You pay the confirmation and university fees and submit original documents to the NLU. An allotment is provisional until you complete these steps.

How to choose between NLUs

  • Specialisations. LL.M. specialisations differ across NLUs, such as constitutional law, business law, criminal law or human rights. Match them to your career goal.
  • Faculty and research. Look at who teaches the specialisation and what the university publishes.
  • Fees and hostel cost. They vary widely, so read each e-brochure.
  • Location and placements. Consider where you want to work or practise afterwards, and check each NLU’s career services.
  • Reservation and domicile rules. Some seats are reserved for domicile candidates, so read the seat rules for each NLU.
  • Your realistic rank. Build a preference list that mixes ambitious, likely and safe choices.
